Event Description: The library hosts a second opportunity for the community to “visit” other countries without leaving DeKalb. Patrons are invited to join us for an afternoon of cultural enlightenment and excitement as we portray the customs of eight different countries throughout the library. Watch a Polish dance performance, make animal masks and dreamcatchers in Tanzania, experience the sights and sounds of Chile, and taste the local cuisine of the Netherlands. And much, much more! Other countries featured include Trinidad and Tobago, Belize, Spain, and Myanmar. Each country will have crafts, activities, and food samples available while supplies last. Special performances will be scheduled throughout the evening. Programs and “passports” will be handed out at the welcome table. Visit each country, get your “passport” stamped, and enter for a chance to win a prize! Bring canned goods or cash for additional raffle tickets. This program is made possible by the Brian D. Slavenas Center for Cross-Cultural Understanding. Brian was born in DeKalb on December 19, 1972. He graduated from DeKalb High School in 1991, after which he served two years in the Army Airborne in Italy. While getting his degree at UIUC in industrial engineering, he also pursued a pilot’s license, a flight instructor’s license, a commercial aircraft license, and taught flight. Brian practiced three principles: don’t hurry, always put yourself in the other person’s place, and think before you speak or act. On November 2, 2003, the Chinook 47 helicopter Brian was piloting was hit by a should-fired missile while flying over Fallujah, Iraq. The flight engineer survived the crash and he said that Brian’s last words were “automatic rotate”, putting the helicopter in emergency mode. While both pilots and fourteen others were killed, twenty of the 36 people on board survived thanks to Brian’s quick thinking and reaction. The purpose of the Center is to provide educational materials and programming with information and insight on world cultures to the public. The library has partnered with Kishwaukee College, the First Lutheran Church, the NIU Center for Southeast Asian Studies, the NIU Latino Resource Center, and the NIU Center for Black Studies to bring this “8 Countries in 1 Day” program to the community. This FREE event is open to all, no registration required! For additional information, please contact Samantha at or at (815) 756-9568 ext. 1701.
